Monday 15th - bike ***** - Long Two Rivers, Deben to the Orwell – Sunny
and hot:).
After laying low yesterday to avoid the hoards that came to Felixstowe we
were keen to get out on our bikes again to make the most of another
beautiful day here in sunny Suffolk:) It was hot during the night and sleep
OK until around 5, dozed for an hour before deciding to take our breakfast
to the picnic tables at the Water Ski jetty by the River Deben. So with
Weetabix, milk, sugar, bowls and a flask packed we left home at 6.20,
defiantly the best time of the day and headed down to a very quiet prom
with just the odd jogger, dog walker, open water swimmer and a single lady
about to set off on a SUP on a sea that was like a mill pool. We were
surrounded by my favourite colour, blue as the sea merged into the sky,
just stunning! The only drawback being the litter which to be fair was
caused by large gulls pulling rubbish out of the bins in search of
breakfast!!!! At The Fludger we turned inland until we re-joined the prom
at the even quieter Dip, pausing to admire the bank of poppies still in
full bloom under a row of beach huts by the cliff top carpark, fingers
crossed that the council don’t spray them as it was a haven for hundreds
of bees which you could clearly hear:) We didn’t pass anyone as we cycled
to Felixstowe Ferry and after our usual spin around the boat yard we headed
out on the River Deben footpath. We saw three people around Kings Fleet but
then no one as we bumped to our picnic table for a cuppa and a couple of
Weetabix and actually watched the high tide turn and start to go out! Not a
huge amount of wild life here with the tide being so high, some Lapwings,
Shell ducks. Turns, Swans, Oyster Catchers and Redshank plus the usual
Pipets, Reed Buntings, Sky Larks and heard a Cuckoo and Nightingale,
actually when you list them it was good for birds:) After a nice relaxing
breakfast in the beautiful peace and quiet we continue but not sure where
to go? We take the third footpath off and get a clear view of Falkenham
Church before meandering across a variety of footpaths towards Kirton,
crossing field of wheat and peas with potatoes blooming, just lovely and
all by ourselves. We spot a Marsh Harrier, buzzard and yellow hammers but
no hare today. I manage to get some nice pics of heavy plant for our
Grandson Arlo, a large crop sprayer and a couple of big diggers which I can
WhatsApp him later:) Then onto Trimley St Martin and then down to the River
Orwell by Loompit lake where the super flat river was set off by five swans
including a Black one which we have never seen here before! We follow the
path to the end of the lake to see what’s about and there was a large
number of Greylag geese, some tufted ducks and mallards those young are now
well grown plus loads of wagtails flitting about on the path and we watch
for ages as the trout put on a jumping display:) Once here we decided to
follow the path to Trimley Marshes stopping at the seat with one of the
best views in Suffolk for a nutty chocolate bar which is half healthy:) We
are entertained by a wakeboarder out on the river in perfect conditions
before continuing to the bird reserve stopping at the winter flood hide but
they are still locked, we think its time they opened them again! Mag even
spotted an Avocet before bumping into old bird watching friend Roger and
stopped for a nice chat, then continuing home arriving a little tired after
being out for 5 hours 20 minutes covering 20 miles enjoying the best of
what Suffolk has to offer. Then exercises in the garden, hot too before a
yummy sandwich and thankfully with the sea breeze failing to materialise we
could just relax:)
